Peter Cairns Motorcycle Training & Car Driver Intensive Courses, Carlisle

Welcome to Peter Cairns

My name is Peter Cairns (Wee Peter To those who know me) and I am the owner, with the help of Scott Cairns, we are qualified Instructors.

Myself with 20 years experience and Scott with 10 years experience, therefore between us we have a vast amount of experience and knowledge to pass on. I am also on the register of post motorcycle trainers which is DSA approved and is related to the Enhanced Rider Scheme which helps improve your skills and reduces your insurance.

I was also a member of IAM and may be able to give advice and possible training geared towards your advanced test, contact me for further information.

We offer a wide range of courses from the complete novice to the experienced rider. You will find a list of these courses on the site and the costs depending on your requirements. If you are unsure what the course or licence requirements there is a information from the DSA web site explaining the law and your licence.

We strongly support Bike Safe which is a course you should consider after passing your test that is when the real learning curve begins, click the logo to give you more information.

BikeSafe is an initiative run by Police Forces around the United Kingdom who work with the whole of the biking world to help to lower the number of motorcycle rider casualties.

Size issues?

If you're thinking it's going to be a problem learning to ride a bike if you're small (like Pete!) or worried about the weight of the bike, we have now lowered our 2017 Kawasaki Z650 and it is also one of the lightest bikes on the market.
We are now Honda Approved in line with Honda's advertisement (on CFM), and have 2 brand new Honda bikes. This means until the end of September you may possibly get your licence paid for you (terms and conditions apply) - please contact us or Lloyd Honda 01228 516216 for further details.

We have heated grips on all our large bikes.

Absolutely great! 10/10 first class service ensured I passed my CBT. My first time ever on a motorcycle. I was a bit shaky at first and couldn't balance properly but Scott was patient and worked with me throughout the course to build my confidence. I got the hang of it over time (quite quickly actually because of Scott) and had some extra time later to practice and get better. You start out in the class room with a briefing and lecture about safety, equipment, etc, then you're introduced to the bike itself and how to ride it. You start off in the car park with some basic manoeuvres like starting and stopping, loops, U-turns and figure of eights - quite a few other useful techniques too, and of course checking mirrors, being aware of your surroundings, etc. Next, you're out on the road right next to the centre, going up and down practising changing gears up and down. I was quite nervous about going out on the road fully (the final part of the training) - was doubting myself a lot and thought I'd never make it but once I was out there, it all came naturally. I had a few hiccups throughout but focused on everything I was taught, road signs and markings which ensured I, the vehicle and others remained safe. As a result, any anxiety I had before was made virtually non existent. I thought I'd be a nervous wreck focusing too much on what other people were thinking and therefore making a million mistakes but nope. As long as you focus solely on riding and being safe, that won't be an issue, and you will because you want to succeed! Scott was on the radio throughout the ride guiding us along and he was very clear and easy and to understand. Overall, I'm now feeling confident and able enough to ride by myself. I will definitely be back for my DAS. I might even do some car lessons at some point. If you're thinking about going for your CBT, just do it. You won't regret it. I also highly recommend knowledge of the Highway Code before you do the CBT. This will make you a safer driver and make the whole thing a lot easier, especially the 'on the road' part.
