McCarthy’s was first established in 1968 by Mick and Margaret McCarthy. We started life as a man and van operator, growing steadily in both transport and then removals and today we are Yorkshire’s largest privately owned removals and storage company still run by Managing Director Mike McCarthy.
Having operated in the Yorkshire region for over 50 years, we now have self storage units in Leeds, Harrogate, York, Huddersfield and Wakefield with more in the pipeline.
As of the 1st January 2021 the removals, shredding and archiving businesses transferred into an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) meaning all the employees own 100% of the business. Therefore, everybody you come into contact with at McCarthy’s has a strong personal interest in making your move an absolute success.
Our core values of outstanding quality of workmanship, exceptional customer service and great value for money are still at the heart of everything we do. The workforce consists of a large number of long-standing employees who embody the high standards set by the McCarthy family. The people who helped build the business into what it is today are now part of the EOT.

Helen Richardson5 StarWe were so impressed with the service provided by McCarthy's it couldn't have gone smoother. Tony and Simon were extremely efficient and at our new house they had everything in their respective rooms before I'd barely had chance to start unpacking! Not a single item damaged, everything was covered and protected well at both ends and we were very happy with the move. I have used them previously and been very impressed so we didn't even shop around for my mum as I wanted a firm that I could trust and make it as stress free for us as they could. And that is exactly what they did. Right from the start the office staff were great.
We had a very bumpy ride with our buyers solicitors prior to removals and I would phone Rachel most weeks to see what they had available. She was so patient and understanding with our situation.
Move day came and as soon as the men arrived they immediately put me at ease and took over. I was even bored at one point which was great!
Gary, Adam and Dan were so friendly, calm and efficient they had the van packed up in no time.
When we got to the new address they were yet again amazing. Making sure they had put everything where I wanted it and it wasn't a problem to move anything for me.
Gary even set the dining table so my mum would be able to sit and look out into the garden whilst eating. So thoughtful!
I highly recommend McCarthy's and wouldn't use anyone else.

Nick Dee5 StarThe whole team at McCarthy's have been very helpful and friendly. Even when our move was delayed it was easy to get re-arranged (using the postponement waiver) The team were quick and careful at loading and unloading and were just nice people to have moving your stuff. The last thing you want is someone to not care and things end up damaged. I would recommend McCarthy's to anyone looking to move house or just put some bits into storage.Thursday 9th June 2022
Jayne Horder5 StarWhat a fantastic service from McCarthy's who moved us from West Yorkshire to the Scottish Borders! From the video call where it was explained what would happen, to delivering packing boxes in advance, to keeping our moving date through thick & thin. The office staff on the end of the phone and email were always helpful, kind and supportive and thorough, making sure all was correct and in place. Oh, and ever cheerful! A massive thank you to Adam and Richard and the other gents who came to pack us up. Adam and Richard were amazing and it was an utter pleasure to have them look after us. We felt they had our best interests first and foremost and nothing was too much trouble. They got us moved long distance through snow, ice and sub-zero temperatures and not a thing got damaged. When the day arrived, the team were INCREDIBLE! Nothing was too much trouble, and it was the less stressful part of the whole process.
