Introduction to the South Wales Region
South Wales is home to around 2.2 million people, almost three-quarters of the whole of Wales. Major cities in this region are Cardiff, Swansea and Newport.
South Wales provides world-class training, innovation and expertise in the aerospace, manufacturing, service, retail, public and finance sector industries. The television and film sectors are fast becoming a major industry in South Wales.
It is home to a number of high-profile blue-chip companies such as Admiral Insurance, Legal & General and the Welsh-based Principality Building Society. A large number of telephone call centres are located in the region. Merthyr Tydfil is home to the principal UK call centre for German mobile telephone company, T-Mobile. Cardiff is a centre for white-collar professions.
Many businesses and start-ups choose South Wales because there is a pool of highly skilled talent already living, working and studying here that are warm, friendly and passionate about everything in life.
Businesses that come to Wales will have easy access to the UK market, with a population of 65 million people. Cardiff, the capital of Wales, is served by its own international airport which connects to main European hubs including Amsterdam, Heathrow and Paris.
Businesses can enjoy the benefits of being close to London without being burdened by the extra costs of being based there.
Apart from the diverse workforce, ease of doing business and having a supportive government, South Wales boasts of its castles, beautiful sceneries, quality of life and widespread availability of outdoor activities and sports.
